If you have never shopped at a thrift store before, then you may have a negative view about these types of stores. However, you shouldn’t! Thrift stores can be a great way to save money (items are usually anywhere from 50% to 90% off!), and you will most likely find several items that you love.
Thrift stores are becoming more and more popular, and the negative opinions of them seem to be going away for most people.
If you’ve never shopped at a thrift store before, here are certain things you should know.
There are plenty of thrift stores out there with NEW or recent clothing.
I think one problem that people have is that when they think of a thrift store, they think of a store with ancient clothing. Or that the clothing at a thrift store is dirty…
However, that is not always the case. There are many “boutique” and fashion-forward thrift stores that carry new clothing, or like-new clothing for customers. Many times you will find clothes in these type of stores that are still being sold at the mall, in great condition.
I have seen thrift stores like Goodwill, thrift stores that carry only teenage or trendy items, and thrift stores that only carry high-end designer labels. Just search around until you find what you need and/or like.
Why would someone sell their new clothes?
You may be wondering though, why would someone sell their new or like-new clothes? There are many reasons for this:
- People might need the money. Thrift stores may not pay much, but if you have a lot of clothes to sell, then it can add up quickly.
- They might have worn it once and decided they didn’t like it. What works for one person doesn’t always work for another.
- They bought and realized they have nothing to wear it with or to. This happens a lot, and has happened to me several times!
Inspect clothing before you buy, and wash them.
Before you buy an item from a thrift store, it is usually best to inspect them. The store workers usually do their best to inspect items, but sometimes little things can miss their inspection. Take a quick look and make sure the item is not too worn, that there are no holes or stains, that zippers work and so on.
You also want to wash the clothes before you buy them. Even if something looks clean, it may not be. Most thrift stores do not wash the clothing items before they are put out on the racks.
Do you ever shop at thrift stores? Why or why not?
