I recently started a new full-time career, and it has been great so far. Many people have been asking me for tips about how they can do the same, so I have created today’s post to help you all. Enjoy!
Have an emergency fund.
I am a big believer that everyone should have an emergency fund. I also think that if you are looking to work for yourself and you are about to jump into this, then you should have an emergency fund. An emergency fund can help you if you were to have a bad month, if a big expense came up in your business, and so on.
It helps you feel more calm and comfortable so that you don’t start running around like your head is about to fall off 🙂
Have a game plan.
If you want to leave your job and make your current side job into a full-time career, you are going to need some sort of game plan. You should know what you want to do, how you will make your income each and every month, how you will find clients, what you will do with your time when it becomes your full-time job, and so on.
Be realistic.
Going from side job to full-time career/business can be a great thing. However, you need to also be realistic. I’m not saying that everyone should be negative before they go for their life long dreams, but I am saying that you should know exactly what you are getting into.
Some things yo should think about include:
- There might be bad months. When working for yourself, bad months are possible. You need to be prepared for this.
- You might work ALL THE TIME. This is something that many freelancers experience.
- Taxes. Don’t forget about these!
Set a date.
The last thing you need to do is set a date for when you plan on leaving your current job and switching to your new full-time career. You should also think of when exactly you will tell your boss and the company you work for.
Some might wait to tell until right before their end date, whereas others might tell their boss months ahead of time. It all depends in what kind of industry you work in. In some industries, it is no surprise that when you put in your notice that you will be asked to leave at that moment (usually when you work with sensitive information). In other industries, you may be asked to stay until your last day
